Wokingham Tories to spend more on Council Exec

July 2, 2003 12:00 AM

At last week's Council Meeting at Shute End, Wokingham (26th June 2003), the ruling Tories admitted that they would be asking for more money to pay for two extra Tory members recruited to their Executive.

This follows an announcement made by Frank Browne (Tory Leader of the Council) at the Annual Council Meeting in May that he had appointed a further Deputy Leader to the Executive. Councillor Coling Lawley (Deputy Leader of the Lib Dem Group) said, "As individual members of the Executive aren't even allowed to make decisions, it's quite extraordinary that the Leader feels the need for another Deputy Leader. What on earth is he supposed to do on the Executive?

"This is a purely empire-building tactic and will do nothing to improve services or the quality of life for our residents. We already have one Executive member without a portfolio, and we have no idea what he does. Now we have two Deputy Leaders without any clear responsibilities.

"This would be a laughing matter, except that it's going to cost residents an extra £12,000 a year."

When questioned by Coling Lawley at the Council Meeting, Frank Browne replied that he would find the extra money from somewhere in the budget.
