Wokingham Lib Dems say Tory Leaflet about Emmbrook School is completely untrue

April 28, 2003 12:00 AM

Wokingham Liberal Democrats say that the Tories should be ashamed of their election leaflet about the closure of Emmbrook School. Councillor Alan Spratling (Leader of the Wokingham District Council Lib Dem Group) said, "The Tory assertions that they have no plans to close Emmbrook School are completely untrue. We have a copy of the Tory plan - their denial is futile in the face of the evidence. Their bid to the Government gives just the option of closing Emmbrook School. If the Government agree to the bid, then it will be for closing Emmbrook School and cramming more pupils into three neighbouring schools."

Councillor Tina Marinos (Lib Dem Councillor for Evendons ward) said, "The Tories tried to get their secret plan through Government without anyone knowing. They have been found out, and it's time for them to come clean. The time to consult the community is before a bid is submitted to Government. On this occasion, the Tory leader says he hasn't even told some of his own Executive.

"The Tory leaflet about Emmbrook School contradicts itself: on the front page it states "There are no such plans", but on the back page it states, "One of the options amongst many would be to move Emmbrook School." It goes on to say, "Other options include expanding Maiden Erlegh, The Holt and The Forest Schools." The truth is that the Tories propose to close Emmbrook School AND cram more pupils into those three schools."

Alan Spratling added, "The Tories have got themselves into a right mess with this bid to Government. They should have the maturity and grace to admit they have made a very big mistake rather than attempt to deny the undeniable."
