Opposition Liberal Democrats on Wokingham District Council have embarrassed the ruling Conservatives into giving the long-promised M4 sound barrier greater priority in the Council's planned capital projects.
At last night's council meeting, the Conservatives said that they were prepared to move the sound barrier up from the bottom of the list to a higher rating. Lib Dem councillors, who have been warning that the Tories had claimed the item was in the capital programme but had provided no money to pay for it, were delighted by the Conservatives' change of heart.
Coling Lawley, the Lib Dem Deputy Leader, said "The Tories haven't got enough money to fund anywhere near all of their announced spending plans, so we are pleased that we have provoked them into accepting that the barrier should be a priority rather than the final item on their wish list."
