Wokingham Liberal Democrats are furious about a letter printed in the local press from Tory Councillor Gary Cowan. Councillor Coling Lawley (Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and Councillor for Coronation ward) said, "Gary made some extraordinary claims in his letter, so I've called on him to retract what he said.
"He claims that the Lib Dems signed up to 8,110 houses to be built in Wokingham district, but this is completely untrue. The Lib Dems have never voted against any reduction in housing numbers, either. The Lib Dems worked hard with their representative, Jack Earnshaw, to negotiate a reduction in the housing allocation, but I'm afraid the Tories completely screwed that up when they regained control of Wokingham District Council two and a half years ago.
"Gary seems to have forgotten that the Lib Dems' offer of help to the Tories to continue the good work of Jack Earnshaw was rejected. The Tories have messed this up all by themselves.
Coling Lawley added, "Gary is either ignorant of the facts, or he is deliberately misleading everyone in an attempt to cover up that the Tories have failed completely to deliver their election promise of reducing the housing allocation. He should apologise for this disgraceful display of gutter politics immediately."
