During a debate on the Tory "Vision for Secondary Education" at the Wokingham District Council meeting last night, Councillor Coling Lawley (Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and Councillor for Coronation ward) said, "This Tory 'Vision' contains some attractive aspirations, and holds out a promise of better schools in ten years' time.
"During last night's debate the Lib Dems talked about ways of expanding and improving the vision for education to help it become a reality (text of Lib Dem motion follows). I am pleased that the Tories appeared to accept the constructive points we were making, but we still have concerns about achieving the vision and how to pay for it.
Councillor Prue Bray (Deputy Leader of the Lib Dem Group and Councillor for Winnersh ward) said, "Whilst I welcome the Vision, promises for the future do nothing for our children's education now. Our children and teachers are doing a wonderful job in schools that are crumbling around them. The Tories are promising jam tomorrow, but offering stale bread today. I want the Tories to listen to our education professionals and to take advice from our partners in education to ensure today's children get the best education possible.
"The Tories are talking about spending £150 million on their Vision, but they have not been able to tell us where the money is coming from. The Tories appear to be raising expectations without the hard cash to support them."
