Wokingham Liberal Democrats were shocked to discover that Wokingham Borough Tory Councillors have overspent by more than £3.5 million on just two building projects.
Councillor Prue Bray (Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and Councillor for Winnersh ward) said, "Based on their own figures, the Tories drastically underestimated the cost of rebuilding Addington School, Bulmershe, by £3,229,000, that's a whopping 47.8%! On top of that, the cost of the new Acorn Centre in Woosehill (replacing the WROC centre in Wokingham) is out by 31%, coming in at £388,500 more than originally estimated.
"These massive miscalculations call into question Wokingham Borough Council's Tories' competence in managing taxpayers' money. Unbelievably, this is the third time they have got their sums wrong on Addington. Each time the bill gets higher - and all this before even a brick has been laid!
"They kept very quiet about these enormous mistakes before the elections, and when I raised concerns about the Tories' building plans in February, they denied they'd got anything wrong. Now, only two weeks after the election, there's a massive hole in the Tory budget."
