Wokingham Lib-Dems' Call-in of Tory Decision to cut Social Services Refused by Wokingham Council

February 27, 2007 12:00 PM

Wokingham Liberal Democrat District Councillors are today angry that the Council has refused to allow them to scrutinise the Tory decision to cut services to adults who have substantial needs. Calling-in a decision is the only means for backbench and opposition councillors to investigate whether the Tory Executive has made decisions properly.

Councillor David Hare (Lib Dem spokesperson for Community Care and Councillor for Hillside ward) said, "Our concern was that this decision had been rushed through in order to set the budget before adequate alternative services were in place. Ironically, it is because the decision was rushed through that we are unable to call-in the decision.

"We have been told that we are not allowed to call-in the decision because 'no decision taken by the Council or due to be referred to Council for final approval e.g. budget may be called in'. By making the decision to cut services immediately before the budget was set, the Tories have made sure the Liberal Democrats can't ask the Executive to explain why they steamrollered these service cuts through.

"This is just typical of the way the Tories behave on Wokingham District Council: they refuse to consider different opinions and ideas, and blindly charge ahead. Changing access to social services will affect a lot of vulnerable people. The way the Conservatives are handling it shows that they are really not listening to these people's concerns."
