Lib-Dems condemn Tories for Dire Social Services Inspection Results

A leading Liberal Democrat Councillor has condemned Wokingham Conservatives for the dire Commission for Social Care Inspectors' report on the services offered by Wokingham Borough Council.
Councillor Stephen Conway (Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Councillor Group and Councillor for Twyford ward) told Wokingham Borough council last night, "Wokingham Borough Council has been judged one of the ten worst councils in the country for provision of adult social services.
"This dire judgement is a direct result of the decision of the Conservative controlled council to change the rules about who is eligible to receive social services help. The change has meant that many vulnerable people - frail older people, the disabled, even wheel-chair users - have lost the council help that they need.
"The Lib Dems opposed these Conservative cuts and warned the Tories of the consequences, but they pressed ahead with cuts in services for vulnerable members of our community.
"What does this disgraceful inspection result say about the Conservative administration's priorities? At the time they were cutting services to some of the most vulnerable members of our community, they
? refurbished the Council Chamber
? installed a giant plasma TV in the Councillors' rest area, and
? spent their time changing the council from a District to a Borough, which brought no benefits to the residents.
Councillor Conway paid tribute to the efforts of the dedicated council staff who do their best to provide social care, and called on the Conservatives to review their decision to cut the services, but the Conservatives refused to reconsider the cuts.
