Wokingham's Tory Budget attacks the most vulnerable

February 22, 2008 12:00 PM

At the Wokingham Borough Council budget meeting last night Wokingham Liberal Democrats slammed the Tory Wokingham Borough Council budget as heartless.

Councillor Stephen Conway (Deputy Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and councillor for Twyford ward) said, "Yet again the Conservatives have hit the most vulnerable people in our community. The Tories have:

§ nearly doubled the fee to elderly and disabled people for rail passes,

§ raised Meals on Wheels prices by nearly 10%, and

§ failed to put in place alternative services for those axed last year, leaving many vulnerable people - frail older people, the disabled, even wheel-chair users - without the help they need.

"The Conservatives have failed our residents through their incompetence to control the Council's finances.

"The Liberal Democrats warned the Tory controlled council last year that cutting services to save a few pounds now would result in having to pay much more later, but they wouldn't listen. Many people are already struggling as it is without this heartless budget - I am concerned that many more people will feel the effects during the year."
