Wokingham Liberal Democrats put the ruling Tory Wokingham Borough Council on the spot at the budget setting Council meeting last night about wheelie bins and rats.
Councillor Dee Tomlin (Lib Dem Councillor for Twyford ward) said, "There's an item in the budget for £1 million to be spent on wheelie bins. This has never been discussed openly - it has come out of nowhere. When councils bring in wheelie bins, they usually have to bring in fortnightly collections, too. The Liberal Democrats are strongly opposed to the Tories dumping this on us.
"At the last local election the Tories promised they would not introduce fortnightly collections, and we expect them to stick to their promise.
"Reading Tories are battling against fortnightly collections because of the increased problem of rats. Our Wokingham Tories have doubled the charges for rat-catching from £25 to £50 at the same time as budgeting for fortnightly collections. What a coincidence! Are the Conservatives bringing in fortnightly rubbish collections to increase the rat population in order to make extra money catching the rats?
Historical note: The old Wokingham Rural District Council went from fortnightly to weekly collections back in the late 1940's, when the amount of rubbish per household was far less.
