Money for the boys?
Wokingham Lib Dems have slammed the ruling Tories at Wokingham Borough Council for creating two more jobs for the boys. At the Wokingham Borough Council meeting last night, the Tory leader of the Council announced the creation of two more "Champions", bringing the total to nine. This is despite the independent Remuneration Panel's recommendation last summer to decrease the number of paid Champions. Since then the Tories have increased the number twice.
Councillor Prue Bray said, "At a time when the council is cutting front line services, it is disgraceful for the Tories to reward their cronies with thousands of pounds of tax payers' money for doing jobs that were previously done for nothing. Each of these Champions - who are appointed on the whim of the Leader of the Council, with no discussion with anyone else - is paid an extra £2,000 a year, with no job description and we rarely, if ever, hear what they do.
"The Lib Dems think the money would be better spent providing grants to voluntary organisations who are trying to pick up the pieces from the Tory cuts to adult social services. Many of those organisations did not receive any money from the council this year.
"Which is most likely to be of benefit to our residents: another two Champions or spending the money on much-needed voluntary services?"
Tory Councillor Alistair Auty (Norreys Ward) has been appointed Champion for Assets, and Tory Cllr Chris Bowring (Evendons Ward) has been appointed Champion for Performance Improvement and Monitoring.
