"Tories must learn from their mistakes" say Wokingham Lib Dems in response to damning Housing Report

June 6, 2008 12:00 PM

Wokingham Liberal Democrats want the Tory-controlled Wokingham Borough Council to commit support to Tenants' Services department staff following a damning inspection report which gave a score of just one star and identified some serious weaknesses.

Councillor Prue Bray (Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and councillor for Winnersh ward) said, "This report puts Wokingham amongst the worst councils in the country. The Tories failed to exercise any control and, worse, ignored warnings of major problems in Tenants' Services department.

"Three senior members of staff have had to leave the Council because of irregularities, but the Tories did nothing for months despite warnings from a whistleblower of serious problems in the department. The people who suffered were our tenants who are left with a huge backlog of repairs and maintenance.

"Wokingham Borough Council has now taken on a new Tenants' Services manager who is doing a great job sorting out the mess. But the Tories must give him the support to do the job properly. The new manager has put together an action plan to tackle the problems identified in the inspection report, but it won't be worth the paper it's written on unless the Tory Executive puts its full weight behind it."
