Wokingham Borough Lib Dem Councillors have called on the Council's Scrutiny Committee to investigate the Tory Executive's decision to increase car parking charges by up to 100%.
Councillor Stephen Conway (Deputy Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and Councillor Twyford ward) is leading the call-in of the Executive decision. He said, "This latest increase in parking charges is a bitter blow to residents and visitors coming to our shopping centres, and also to our hard-pressed traders.
"This increase comes on top of the crippling increase in charges (again, up to 100%) the Tories imposed on us two years ago. At that time over 6000 people signed a petition against the charges and the business community and local residents spoke passionately against the proposals. The Tories went ahead with the increases regardless.
"Our shopping centres were struggling then, and things have not improved. More shops are leaving our centres, and the credit crunch is beginning to bite. Increasing parking charges is the last thing the Council should be doing if they want our towns to survive."
The Liberal Democrats hope that the Scrutiny investigation will result in the Tory Executive reversing their decision.
