There were raised eyebrows at last night's Wokingham Borough Council meeting when leading Tories revealed they had not yet decided what to do with the Ryeish Green School site. The information came out as a result of a question from Cllr Prue Bray (Leader of the Liberal Democrat Councillor Group and councillor for Winnersh ward).
The school will shut in two years' time following a decision last year by the Conservatives to close it. The school occupies a large site close to an area that the Tories are proposing for large-scale housing development.
Prue Bray said, "I am very surprised that the Conservatives have not given any thought to the future of this site. The Council is right in the middle of making decisions about the infrastructure that is needed to support major development for the next 20 years. If the Tories decide later on to sell the Ryeish Green School site for housing, much more infrastructure will be needed than they are planning for, but it will be too late to factor it in.
"That will undermine the Council's strategy and risks leaving residents in the Shinfield area without the services they will need."
