Wokingham Lib Dems and Tories unite to call for Government to scrap decision to increase Car Tax retrospectively

August 1, 2008 12:00 PM

At last night's Wokingham Borough Council meeting, Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors united to call on the Government to scrap their decision to increase car tax retrospectively. The Conservatives submitted a motion about car tax, but the Liberal Democrats suggested an amendment to strengthen the wording, which was accepted by the Tories.

Councillor Jenny Lissaman says, "The Government has decided to increase car tax on the most polluting cars, but this is being forced on people who already own these cars. Liberal Democrats believe that any increase in car tax should only be levied on new cars. That way, buyers can choose to buy a less polluting car and pay less tax, or a high polluting car and pay more tax. The critical difference is that buyers would be able to choose knowing what tax they would have to pay in advance.

"This Government is bringing in a retrospective tax, which is outrageous.

This is the Government's version of green taxation, but it just shows that they haven't a clue. Even David Cameron, who is not known for sound judgement on green issues, said in the House of Commons on 4th June, "What on earth is green about taxing someone who bought a Ford Mondeo five years ago?"."

The motion was supported unanimously.
