Full inquiry must be held over Nuclear site flooding

October 24, 2008 7:00 AM

Commenting on the revelation that nuclear weapons sites at Burghfield and Aldermaston were close to being 'overwhelmed' by flood water last summer, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary, Nick Harvey said:

"This is just not good enough. Nuclear weapons sites should be capable of withstanding attacks by enemies and terrorists, but these seem to have been unable even to resist the rain.

"A full inquiry needs to be held to get to the bottom of what happened and to ensure that such near misses can never take place again."

Councillor Royce Longton, who sits on the AWE's Local Liaison Committee, added:

"We have been assured that there were no injuries, and no release of radioactive or other noxious chemicals. Nevertheless, we need to be certain that such sensitive sites are not vulnerable to problems caused by flooding in the future. I agree with Nick Harvey that an independent enquiry would be valuable. It might provide some welcome reassurance following the concern that has been raised by recent media speculation."
