Council Documents show that Tory-Controlled Wokingham Borough Council plans to close Emmbrook School

December 5, 2008 12:00 PM

Wokingham Liberal Democrats have discovered that Wokingham Borough Council documents show that the Tory-controlled council intends to close Emmbrook School, and replace it with a new secondary school in Arborfield.

Councillor Prue Bray (Leader of the Liberal Democrat Councillor Group and councillor for Winnersh ward) said, "A document sent to the government last week expressing a wish to bid for Government money to re-build the borough's secondary schools states very clearly that the Tories are planning to close Emmbrook School. This comes just days after I asked the Executive member for children's services (Cllr Norman Jorgensen) what school he intended to close. He told me '…it would be very premature to say anything about any of the schools'.

"Why couldn't Cllr Jorgensen just be honest and tell me that he intended to close Emmbrook School? I can see why the Tories might not want to publicise their plans, given that they had to do a U-turn last time they decided to close Emmbrook, but the more they try to hide the truth, the worse it will be for the Tories, as the public will understandably be suspicious of what is going on. But that's a lesson it seems the Tories never learn.

"Cllr Jorgensen told me last week that any school closure would have to be preceded by a full consultation process. Let's hope that it won't be a repeat of the disastrous process that preceded the closure of Ryeish Green School."
