Wokingham Borough Mayor, Cllr Pauline Hellier-Symons, has decided to cancel her £3,000 party for councillors and Town and Parish Council dignitaries.
Reacting to the news, Councillor Prue Bray (Leader of the Liberal Democrat Councillor Group and councillor for Winnersh ward) said, "The Liberal Democrats believe the Mayor made a big mistake organising a lavish party at a time when residents are struggling to keep their jobs and their homes.
"It was regrettable that the Mayor said that the cost (£3,000) was so little that she failed to see how it could do anything of use. This was grossly insensitive and showed just how out of touch she is with real people getting on with real lives in the real world.
"I'm sure the Mayor was surprised at the strength of feeling against her ill-judged party, but I am pleased that she has responded to the leadership shown by the Lib Dem Councillors by cancelling the event. Let's hope the Tories on Wokingham Borough Council get their priorities right in future."
