Tory Councillor Alistair Auty performed a U-turn at last night's Annual Council Meeting at Shute End when he presented a petition expressing concern about the consequences to the community of the housing development to the north of Wokingham town that is proposed in the Core Strategy.
Councillor Prue Bray (Leader of the Lib Dem councillor group and councillor for Winnersh ward) said, "Alistair Auty's support for the petition came as a great surprise, as all the Conservatives voted for this development in Council last June. Either he agrees with the development or he opposes it - he can't have it both ways.
"If he had real concerns about the proposed level of housing development in north Wokingham, he should have done something about it earlier. He could have followed the Liberal Democrat lead and voted against the Core Strategy last June, and presented evidence to the Examination in Public. Supporting the Core Strategy then, but presenting a petition against it now, is blatantly hypocritical.
"He appears to be trying to distance himself from the Tory support for this development, but the fact is he agreed it along with the rest of his Tory colleagues."
