Wokingham Lib-Dems renew call for 30 minutes' free parking in shopping centres

At the Wokingham Borough Council meeting tonight, Wokingham Liberal Democrats renewed their call for 30 minutes' free parking in the Borough's shopping centres.
Councillor Phil Challis (councillor for Loddon ward and Woodley Town Councillor) said, "I have calculated that 30 minutes' free parking in the Lytham Road East car park in Woodley would cost less than £1,000 a week. This is a small price to pay for helping our shopping centre to remain vibrant in these difficult economic times.
"And it's a far cry from the incredible figure of £500,000 a year that the Tories say it would cost the council. The Lib Dems are not calling for all the council's car parks to offer 30 minutes' free parking: we want this offered in the shopping centres to help our shoppers and shopkeepers.
"The last thing you want to do when times are hard is to increase the cost of parking, but this is just what the Wokingham Tories have done. Now that the Tories can see that 30 minutes' free parking won't cost a fortune, I'm hoping they will reconsider this idea."
