Wokingham Liberal Democrats are outraged that the Conservatives on Wokingham Borough Council have approved a budget which doesn't stack up. Hidden in the budget papers was a reference to 'significant supplementary estimates'. This means that the Conservatives have failed to put funding in the budget to cover all their planned spending.

Lib Dem Group Leader Prue Bray said: "Services have been cut, school buildings are crumbling, the roads are full of pot holes, council tenants are suffering and Children's Services has been judged among the worst in the country. The council is going backwards in terms of performance. But all we hear from the Conservatives is that it's the government's fault for not giving Wokingham enough money. It is time the Conservative leadership stopped blaming other people and admitted that they are the ones at fault."

Up to 1.7m pensioners nationally will miss out on Cold Weather Payments triggered by the recent weather, according to analysis of Government figures by the Liberal Democrats. Cold Weather Payments of £25 a week are paid to people on low incomes who receive a qualifying benefit, such as Pension Credit, which goes unclaimed by as many as 1.7m pensioners.

Lib-Dems Back Bus Subsidy

Wokingham Liberal Democrats have welcomed the borough council's decision to provide funding for bus services in Woodley and Earley, previously cut by Reading Buses, to be retained. The one year subsidy, approved last Thursday, will secure the future of the No 62, the No 22 and the No 83 bus routes.

Earley Lib Dems are celebrating their success in a by-election in the Radstock ward of Earley Town Council on 26th November. Steve Scarrott held the seat against the Tories by 618 votes to 600. The by-election was caused by the sad death of Lib Dem councillor Carol Mitchell. Steve Scarrott has a wealth of experience and has previously served on the Council.
