Lib Dem Anger As Tories Kick Out "Fairtrade" Proposal

March 21, 2005 12:00 AM

Wokingham Liberal Democrats are angry that Tory Councillors refused to support their bid for Wokingham district to become a "Fairtrade" zone. The purpose of a Fairtrade zone is to contribute to the Fairtrade Foundation's aim of tackling poverty by enabling disadvantaged producers from poor countries to receive a better deal, through encouraging support for products bearing the Fairtrade Mark.

Councillor Prue Bray (Deputy Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and Councillor for Winnersh ward), who proposed a Fairtrade motion at the Wokingham District Council meeting last night, said, "The Liberal Democrats want to see the people of Wokingham being given the opportunity to buy Fairtrade products from food shops and restaurants.

"Many Councils up and down the country have spearheaded Fairtrade zones, and I want Wokingham district to add their name to the growing list. Reading has been a Fairtrade town for over a year, and Lib Dem-controlled Windsor & Maidenhead have just signed up.

"We've had lots of support - a petition with hundreds of signatures was presented to Council, and I've had letters and e-mails from many organisations and individuals. There was a real feeling of optimism that we could work together to make Fairtrade a reality in Wokingham district.

"I'm still finding it hard to believe that the Tories would put in a wrecking amendment to my proposal. What they've actually done is voted through a motion which prevents us from becoming a Fair Trade zone.

"Even when they were told that they had got their facts wrong, they insisted on voting against Fairtrade for Wokingham district. I don't believe they ever intended to support all those people and organisations who want to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged producers. The Tories have shown just how mean-spirited and selfish they can be. We are all absolutely disgusted."
