Country-Park Car Parking Charges Show Tory Hypocrisy Say Lib Dems

June 12, 2006 12:00 AM

Councillor Jenny Lissaman (Lib Dem spokesperson for Environment and Highways and Councillor for Bulmershe & Whitegates ward) says, "Spot the difference in the Tories before and after the local elections:

BEFORE the election, the Tories decided to provide free parking in Wokingham town centre whilst extensive roadworks were taking place.

AFTER the election, the Tories decided to extend charges for parking in Dinton Pastures and California Country Park to pay for the shortfall in car parking income in the town centre.

"The timing of the two decisions tells it all - the Tories are happy to provide sweeteners before the elections, but make sure you pay up after the elections."

Councillor Prue Bray (Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and Councillor for Winnersh ward), says, "Residents of Wokingham District can be forgiven for being cynical about this 'back-door' charge. Income from car parking charges should be used to maintain car parks and associated highways work. This mean-spirited levy on people visiting our country parks will pay for the Tory pre-election sweetener.

"It would have been more honest to announce the two decisions at the same time."
