Lib Dems call for community involvement in Council plans for Bulmershe Leisure Centre

September 19, 2014 12:00 AM

Woodley residents sent a clear message to Wokingham Borough Council last night, as a Lib Dem petition called on the Conservatives to involve the local community when considering plans for Bulmershe Leisure Centre's future. Lib Dems and Woodley Town Council worked with residents to save Bulmershe Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre in 1995 when the Conservative controlled Wokingham District Council was prepared to see it closed.

Cllr Tom McCann (Loddon ward) said "Over a thousand people have signed this petition which shows just how important and valued this leisure facility is to local residents. Woodley Lib Dems support our community and want them to be actively involved in the plans being drawn up. The users of the centre are best placed to help create the future plans. Now is the time to invest and residents want to see new improved facilities charging affordable prices so that the pool and other facilities are accessible by all the community.

Unlike other pools in the borough the running cost of the existing facilities in Bulmershe had to be paid for by Woodley Town rather than Wokingham Borough. Residents want Wokingham Borough to invest for Woodley residents and to end the double taxation in Woodley.

This petition tells the Conservatives that residents will not put up with the Conservatives' usual way of doing things, in which they always think they know best and then tell people what they are going to do. That approach will not be good enough and the Conservatives need to involve the local community."
