Every year the Liberal Democrats present an award to a woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the party. Presented in memory of Patsy Calton, an MP who served her constituents throughout her personal battle with cancer, the award is intended to celebrate achievements by women and to encourage more women to participate in political processes at all levels.

Jenny Woods, the Liberal Democrat PPC for Reading East, with the national award.

Jenny said, "I wanted to use this occasion to encourage all women, whichever party they support, to become more involved in the political process. Like many people, I used to feel disconnected from politics, but then I learned that through campaigning I could bring about changes I wanted to see happen."

"Patsy was a great campaigner. She was diagnosed with breast cancer before she became an MP, but had successful treatment and came back fighting. Sadly the cancer returned in 2005, but she kept up her political work and was re-elected in May that year. She lived long enough to be sworn back into Parliament, dying just five days after being welcomed back into the House of Commons."

"I hope that Patsy's story will encourage others to take up the fight. We need more women to get involved in politics - I am the only woman candidate of any party in Reading East for this general election. I am very proud to have been given the Patsy Calton award in her memory."
