Wokingham Borough Council's Lib Dem group has significant concerns about the possible implications for Wokingham Borough Council's Children's services following the serious case review in Oxfordshire.

Cllr Lindsay Ferris (Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat group) said "As councillors we have a duty of care to all the children in this borough, particularly the most vulnerable. We want to be sure that we are doing everything in our power to protect them.

Following the Oxfordshire serious case review, Wokingham Borough Council is already conducting an internal cross party review. This will look at the implications for the Borough, as the Chief Executive was previously employed in a senior role in Children's Services in Oxfordshire. However the Lib Dem group thinks the Council should go further."

Lindsay explained "We are pressing for an independent review which would go wider than the internal review and would cover the whole of the Children's Services functions at this council, not just an individual. Wokingham Borough Council must be open and transparent in dealing with this. We want to avoid this issue being swept under the carpet which is what an internal review could do. The Council must learn from the failures at Rotherham and elsewhere.

An independent and thorough review across Children's Services would identify any areas, attitudes and processes that might need improvement in order to fully satisfy everyone that we are doing the very best for vulnerable children in our borough."
