Britain deserves better than this Tory stitch up.

July 12, 2016 10:14 AM

Theresa May is the second female leader of the Conservative Party and in 48 hours she will become Britain's second ever female Prime Minister. That is something people across the political spectrum should welcome.

In terms of her policy outlook, however, Liberal Democrats have serious concerns that stem from May's time at the Home Office and some of the deeply illiberal policies she implemented and pursued.

Today, Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat leader said: "Just 13 months after the last election the Conservatives have plunged the UK into chaos. May has not set out an agenda and she has no right to govern. She has not won an election, no one knows what she stands for. It is simply inconceivable that Theresa May should be crowned Prime Minister without having won an election in her own party, let alone in the country."

We believe there must be an election. The Conservatives must not be allowed to ignore the electorate, their mandate is shattered and lies in ruins. Britain deserves better than this Tory stitch up. May must lay out her ideas - and her specific ideas for Brexit - before of the country.

In any election the Liberal Democrats will set out an optimistic, positive plan for Britain. We will stabilise the economy, improve education, deliver a new deal for our NHS, restore the green agenda and secure Britain's place at the heart of Europe.
