Newbury and West Berkshire Liberal democrats select Parliamentary Candidate

August 3, 2016 9:15 AM

Judith Bunting has been unanimously selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Newbury constituency.

Following reports that the new Prime Minister might go to the country early, before a possible recession and to take advantage of Labour in-fighting, Liberal Democrat candidates are now in place in key seats all across the country. This means the party is ready to fight a general election whenever it comes.

Judith Bunting has a strong record of standing up for local people. She has campaigned hard to stop the Council Cuts to local services, and campaigned for increased mental health provision in West Berkshire and better local broadband coverage across our villages. In 2015, she also won an important change in charity VAT laws after a 2-year campaign with local charity, West Berkshire Rapid Response Cars. Judith is currently supporting Newbury Football Club's campaign to keep a ground near the town centre for the hundreds of people who use the club.

Judith Bunting said: "I am proud to have been selected by the Liberal Democrats in our area. It would be a huge honour to represent the people of Newbury and the surrounding area in parliament.

"However, I am only too well aware that our area has challenges. Thus, my three campaign priorities will be:

  • to protect local services for children and young people,
  • to increase the provision of housing for social and affordable rent,
  • to ensure our local businesses have what they need to thrive.

"The Conservatives have destroyed their reputation for economic competence, with investment in the UK now threatened by the uncertainty of Brexit, putting Newbury jobs at risk. Labour is focused on in-fighting and has even suspended local party meetings across the country. The Liberal Democrats, meanwhile, are an open, optimistic and united party and we are already selecting candidates in key seats, like Newbury.

The Liberal Democrats will go into any future election as the only party committed to protecting Britain's role in the heart of Europe.

Judith Bunting went on, "Accepting defeat with good grace does not mean that you roll over and give up.

"We are well placed to fight a general election whenever it is held and I am raring to go. Since the referendum we have signed more than 17,500 new members nationally, including a large number in Newbury and the surrounding area. This means that we now have more members than we've ever had in this century. We have a new army of committed activists who will be joining me on the doorstep, to make the case for Newbury, Thatcham, Hungerford and all our area. Liberal Democrats are committed to spreading opportunity for the next generation and focused on re-building the British economy to protect our jobs and services."
