Press Release from Wokingham Liberal Democrat Councillor Group

Heathrow Expansion Eventually Debated at Wokingham Borough Council

For the last 10 months the Conservatives at WBC have done their very best to stop any debate on the future expansion of Heathrow Airport. When the Lib Dem motion opposing Heathrow expansion was finally discussed at the 6th July council meeting, the Conservatives took out any specific mention of Heathrow and made the motion about opposing expansion of airports which don't meet carbon emissions rules instead.

Cllr Paul Fishwick, Liberal Democrat Highways & Transport Spokesperson says: "The Liberal Democrats have grave doubts whether there can ever be any such thing as a carbon neutral airport expansion but of course we are opposed to any airport expansion that isn't carbon neutral. So we accepted what the Conservatives proposed as at least a step in the right direction. However, we are really disappointed in the way they have approached this.

The reason our motion was specifically about Heathrow was that we, and many residents, had major concerns about the impact of a potential Third Runway, which was a very real prospect when we put our motion in last September. Despite this, the Conservatives had committed the council to supporting Heathrow expansion. They did so through the decision of a single Conservative councillor without any consultation with the rest of us. We think both the decision itself and the way it was taken were appalling and it needed to be overturned. Well, now it has been - even though the Conservatives did their best to make sure the word "Heathrow" wasn't mentioned."
