If passed, the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill would update Britain’s climate and environmental legislation in line with commitments that the UK Government has already made internationally – first, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with limiting global heating to 1.5°C - and second, to reverse nature loss by 2030.

The CAN Bill has already attracted the support of major figures such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden and (former net zero tsar) Chris Skidmore, who said Ministers should back this “Climate Change Act 2”

Later this month, on Friday 24th January, the CAN Bill has its second reading debate and vote in the House of Commons, led by its sponsor and Lib Dem MP, Dr Roz Savage.

The CAN Bill is supported by 192 MPs, including the Lib Dem MP for Wokingham, Clive Jones, who said that this “game changing” legislation was our “best chance” to tackle the challenges that our natural environment and climate faces – and that they would call on the UK Government to support the CAN Bill.

Clive Jones, the MP for Wokingham, said:
“I have heard from countless people across Wokingham about just how worried they are about the future of our climate and the environment.

“That is why I’m proud to support the cross-party Climate and Nature Bill, which represents our best chance of protecting our natural environment and building the clean-powered industries of the future.

“The CAN Bill, which I will vote for at its second reading on the 24th of January, will put the UK on track to meet our global commitments and give current and future generations the security that they deserve.

“It is an opportunity that I, and fellow MPs, cannot pass up. I hope that the Government works with me, and the other 192 supporters of the CAN Bill in the Commons, to advance this landmark legislation on the 24th of January.”
