Your Liberal Democrat councillors for Maiden Erlegh and Whitegates
Since May 2024, Stephen Newton and Andy NG Siu-hong have been your Liberal Democrat councillors.

Stephen Newton
I moved to Earley in 2007 for my work with a global financial services company. I am married with two grown-up children who attended Loddon Primary School where I was chair of governors. My wife and I are foster carers for Wokingham Borough Council and I am on the Leadership Team at Lower Earley Baptist Church. I took early retirement in 2022 to focus on what I want to do in the community. When not involved with councillor duties I help with a children’s midweek youth club and am part of a badminton club.
Before moving to Earley, I was chair of a community association representing 15,000 residents and local businesses in Shoeburyness in Essex and Chair of the user group for the C2C Rail line. I have been an active campaigner for many years and am proud of what I have achieved. Since being elected last May I have been delighted to help the ward residents who have contacted me, campaign for improvements in the ward, and provide input to the council’s Risk Management and Procurement programmes.

Andy NG Siu-hong
I am Andy NG Siu-hong. I was a District Councillor in Hong Kong where I worked very hard to serve the community and strive for democracy. In 2021 I was forced to resign and leave Hong Kong for safety as Beijing carried out mass arrests of Democratic politicians. I now live in Earley with my family and have a son who attends Maiden Erlegh School.
To serve the community and strive for fairness and good have been my aspirations since I was a kid. I enjoy solving people’s problems, making people’s voices heard, improving governing, and upholding democratic values. Now I serve as a volunteer in some British Hong Kong people's organisations and the Lib Dems, for the community and for upholding democratic values.
I know how important a councillor is to the local community and how symbolic it is to be probably the first former Hong Kong District Councillor elected in the UK. Although my mission to serve as a councillor was suppressed in Hong Kong, as we share many of the same British values in this great country, I know I will have the hope to restart my life's campaign. For the community, for a fair deal, and for democracy.

I have lived in Earley for 40 years and have had a varied career in both the British Merchant Navy and as a Chartered Engineer. I represented Maiden Earley on Wokingham Borough Council from 2022-2024 and I’m also an Earley Town Councillor.
I now volunteer at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, driving the buggy which helps patients round the hospital and I’ve been vigorously supporting Clive Jones, MP in his campaign to start the rebuild of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
I’m also an experienced local campaigner and I’ve been involved in getting many improvements to our area including:
- The repairs to the station footbridge
- New play equipment in Meadow Park
- Drainage works to reduce flooding in Culver Lane
- Additional parking restrictions in residential areas
- Improvements to the lake at Maiden Erlegh Nature Reserve
